Film at the Towner

A series of films exploring the past 50 years of LGBT life


The Towner is presenting a programme of films and events that explore LGBT+ experiences in the past 50 years since the passing of the 1967 Act which partially decriminalised homosexuality in the UK.

 

The dates are as follows:

 

Saturday 28th October at 2.30pm

'David is Homosexual' 

Made in 1978 the film tells the story of a lonely young man trying to come to terms with his homosexuality

'Queerama' 2017

Recently shown on the BBC as part of their season of LGBT programming, archive material examines the last 100 years of gay life in Britain.

Thursday 2nd November at 6pm

'Love is the Devil':Study for a Portrait of Francis Bacon 1998

A biopic of the painter Francis Bacon concentrating on his relationship with George Dyer with performances from Derek Jacobi and Daniel Craig.

Saturday 4th November at 1.30pm 

Looking Awry:Representing Bisexual Desires on Screen and 'Sunday Bloody Sunday' 1971

Jacob Engelberg will be discussing bisexual representation in film with a 60 minute illustrated talk followed by a screening of Sunday Bloody Sunday starring Glenda Jackson, Peter Finch and Murray Head.

Set in the Yorkshire Pennines the film tells the story of the developing relationship between a young farmer and a Romanian farmhand.
