'Gay UK: Love, Law and Liberty'

An Exhibition at the British Library until 19th September


The British Library is holding a free exhibition telling the story of the struggles for equality experienced by gay men and women in the UK. 50 years after the Sexual Offences Act the exhibition looks at the events beforehand, its impact and what challenges still remain.

Items on display include the 1957 Wolfenden report, the Gay Liberation Manifesto and vinyl from the Pet Shop Boys.

There are a series of talks taking place during the exhibition, one of interest is entitled 'Fred Barnes: The Black Sheep of the Family'

Fred Barnes was a Music Hall singer in the 1880's onwards whose outrageous appearance made him a star and led to his downfall.

Performer and curator Christopher Green presents an evening celebrating Barnes through story and song.

The event takes place on Monday 31st July from 7.15 to 9.00
